A New Look
Arkansas Baptist High School in Little Rock has named Billy Goss as its new athletic director for the 2010-2011 school year according to Superintendent Arthur Bennett. Goss spent approximately 13 years teaching and coaching various sports in the Pulaski County School System, one year as assistant football coach at Northwestern State University and 3 years as an assistant football coach and 11 years as the head baseball coach at Arkansas Tech University. He will also serve as the head junior high football coach and teach math.
“We are excited to have a man of Coach Goss’ experience and track record join Arkansas Baptist School System. He will help take an already successful athletic program and take it to a higher level,” said Bennett. Bennett also announced other changes within the athletic department:
Brad Helm had been promoted to head varsity coach after serving the past four years as the offensive coordinator for the school. Helm hold a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas in kinesiology education. Prior to teaching and coaching at Arkansas Baptist, he worked as an assistant coach for seven years at Shiloh Christian and Springdale High School. He has worked under the leadership of present Auburn University and former University of Arkansas Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn. He has also served as the offensive coordinator for both the junior high and varsity football teams at ABSS for the past four years.
Bernie Cox has been named assistant defensive coach for the varsity football team. He spent the last 35 years as the head football coach and history teacher at Central High School. In the history of Arkansas high school football, Coach Cox is second in total wins with 271. Coach Cox led eight teams to the state finals, winning seven state championships. He earned a bachelor degree and masters degree from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. He earned his school administration degree from the University of Central Arkansas. Coach Cox is finishing his 44th year as a football coach and history teacher.
